Courtesy Family Condemns the Shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Enderby, BC — February 11, 2026 — Courtesy Family condemns the horrific shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia. This appalling act of violence, which has claimed multiple lives and shattered families, is an assault not only on a school, but on the very fabric of the community.

We are devastated by the profound grief and trauma the people of Tumbler Ridge are enduring. A place dedicated to learning, growth, and safety has been transformed into a scene of unimaginable loss. Our hearts ache for the victims, their families, classmates, educators, and every resident whose sense of security has been shaken.

We extend our deepest condolences to our staff members and to all members of the community who may be directly or indirectly affected by this tragedy. We recognize that such violence leaves lasting scars, and we stand ready to support those who are mourning and struggling in the days and weeks ahead.

“This tragedy has touched every corner of Tumbler Ridge. To the families facing unimaginable loss, to the students and educators carrying trauma, and to the broader community grieving together — we extend our deepest and most heartfelt sympathies. You are not alone,” said Willie Mphoka, Executive Director of Courtesy Youth and Family Services.

“Communities are tested in moments like this, but they are also defined by how they respond. We have already witnessed extraordinary courage, compassion, and solidarity. It is through that unity and shared strength that healing will begin. We remain committed to supporting this community as it rebuilds and finds light beyond this darkness,” Mphoka added.

We express profound gratitude to the first responders — including police officers, paramedics, firefighters, and emergency personnel — who risked their lives to protect others and bring the situation under control. Their bravery and commitment to safeguarding fellow citizens reflect extraordinary courage in the face of grave danger.

At this painful moment, we call for unity — as a community, as a province, and as a nation. In the face of hatred and violence, we must come together in solidarity, compassion, and resolve. We must support one another, reject division, and reaffirm our shared commitment to the safety and dignity of every person.

Courtesy Family stands with Tumbler Ridge and we remain united in our determination to heal and uphold the values that bind us together.

Courtesy Family Opens New Resource in the Shuswap Region, Honoring the Spirit of “Every Child Matters”

Enderby, BC — September 29, 2025 — In recognition of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Courtesy Youth and Family Services is proud to announce the opening of a new resource in Enderby, situated in the heart of the Shuswap region. This important initiative, made possible with support from the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD), reflects our collective commitment to culturally grounded care.

The resource is a space for connection, and culture— offering programming and supports designed with and for Indigenous and non-Indigenous youth and families. Grounded in cultural respect, trauma-informed practice, and the belief that Every Child Matters, the resource honors the lived experiences, strengths, and identities of the families it serves.

“This new resource in the Shuswap represents more than a service expansion — it’s a promise to listen, to walk together, and to build trust through action,” said Willie Mphoka, Director, Courtesy Youth and Family Services. “We are deeply grateful to MCFD for supporting this initiative and for investing in a resource that uplifts the strengths, cultures, and voices of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous families and communities.”

As we mark National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we celebrate the strength, resilience, and diversity of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples. We pause to remember the children who never returned home, the Survivors of residential schools. We recommit ourselves to walking the path of truth, reconciliation, and justice — together.

The new resource offers a safe, inclusive, and culturally affirming space where Indigenous and non-indigenous identity is celebrated, and where every child and every family is seen, valued, and supported.

From its conception, the resource reflects Courtesy Youth and Family Services’ core values: cultural humility, inclusion, and person-centred care. It is a place where partnerships thrive, and where Indigenous knowledge leads.

We acknowledge, with deep gratitude and respect, that this resource is located on the unceded, traditional territory of the Secwépemc people, and we honour that truth in all aspects of our work.

This milestone would not have been possible without the trust and support of the Ministry of Children and Family Development in the Shuswap, and the invaluable collaboration of local community partners. Together, we are working to ensure that services are not only accessible — but that they truly reflect and respect the communities they are meant to serve.
